The story of the Presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple is told in Luke 2: 28-38.

The prototype used for the icon Presentation in the Temple came from a illustrated manuscript. It reflects a more primitive style. The figures and the garments are more highly stylized and the colors are rich and vibrant.

This particular icon, Our Lady of Sorrows, came through a personal vision given the iconographer, Jane Ladik. Recently traveling in Romania, Miss Ladik found many versions of this icon using the same composition and colors of her vision.

The Descent from the Cross was an early attempt by Miss Ladik to re-iconize a work of art from a renaissance painting. Therefore the background reflects a more realistic setting. However, iconographic history of the image can be seen in the figures. Miss Ladik was especially drawn to the face of the virgin, who though shattered by grief, is still consumed with concern for her son.
