| The
icon Saint Gabriel was commissioned as a companion to the Virgin
of Tenderness. To create a sense of movement and relationship between the two icons, Gabriel's pose incorporates elements from icons of the Annunciation. Therefore the pose is not static but reflects movement with Gabriel inclining his head toward the Virgin and Child. The meditation of the icon is from Saint Luke 1:37. "Behold, nothing shall be impossible with God.” |

| The blue used in Gabriel's outer garment symbolizes heaven. The use of a light shade of blue, combined with the rose tone of the inner garment sugest the heavens viewed at sunrise, with the dawning light caught in the atmosphere. The heavenly being is made visible through the fleeting colors of the rising sun which signals the birth of a new day and heralds the new creation. Gabriel is shown holding the orb of the universe, a symbol of the omnipotence of the message he brings. It is topped by the cross reflecting the universality of the salvation work of Christ. The staff in his hand symbolizes his authority as an Archangel. |
