The Descent from the Cross was an early attempt by Miss Ladik to re-iconize a work of art from a renaissance painting. Therefore the background reflects a more realistic setting. However, iconographic history of the image can be seen in the figures. Miss Ladik was especially drawn to the face of the virgin, who though shattered by grief, is still consumed with concern for her son.
